Every print in the Gohar collection began as a stone. Not as a mood board or a colour reference — a specific mineral, with a birthplace, a chemistry and a history, whose pattern our cloth happens to repeat. We researched each one the way a jeweller would: where it forms, who digs it, what it was carried for, and what the trade gets wrong about it. Each piece is named after the stone its fabric matches, and this page is the record of that research.

This is not a shop page. It is the library behind the collection — the histories, the geology, and the honest footnotes.

How to read this

A trade name is not a place. Several of these stones are sold under names invented by dealers, not geologists. Where a name is doing marketing work rather than geological work, the entry says so.

A famous source is not the current source. Some of the most quotable mines closed decades or centuries ago. Where that is true, we tell you what actually supplies the market now.

Unverified means unverified. Where our research could not confirm a claim against a source worth trusting, we say that too, and we do not publish an origin story we cannot stand behind.

Blue anhydrite · worn as The Angelite

Angelite is the trade name for the massive blue-grey form of anhydrite — and anhydrite is simply gypsum with the water taken out. The name comes from the Greek anhydros, waterless. It forms in evaporite beds, laid down where ancient shallow seas dried until only their salts were left standing: a soft powder-blue body flecked and veined with white, the colour of sky rather than of water. It is also a fragile record — give it water again and it slowly takes it back, turning into gypsum, a different mineral altogether. So it is kept dry, and kept carefully.

The cloth

A dusty, slightly greyed blue carries the whole field, and across it fine white blossom opens on thin green stems — scattered rather than banded, the way the white sits inside the stone. The quietest print in the collection, for the rooms where you would rather be understood than noticed.

Where it comes from

Effectively one place: the Casapalca Mine in Huarochirí Province, Peru — a silver-lead-zinc mine where the blue anhydrite comes out as a by-product, worked into shape by lapidary workshops in Lima. The stone is ancient; the name is not. It was coined in 1987, and we think it is more honest to tell you that than to pretend otherwise.

Astrophyllite

Star-leaf mineral · worn as The Astrophyllite Spray

The name is Greek — astron, star, and phyllon, leaf — and it describes exactly what the stone does: bronze-gold bladed crystals radiate through dark host rock in starburst sprays, each blade catching the light like a metallic leaf. It was first described in 1854 from a small Norwegian island, and the most celebrated material comes from the Khibiny massif on Russia's Kola Peninsula, far above the Arctic Circle, where the sprays fan through charcoal-dark rock like fireworks frozen mid-burst.

The cloth

Bronze blades scattered across a dark ground, radiating outward — the fabric repeats the stone's gesture almost exactly, which is how this piece earned its name.

Where it comes from

Norway holds the type locality; the Kola Peninsula holds the legend. A collector's mineral more than a commercial one — it is rarely cut, mostly kept whole, prized for the spray rather than the polish.

Azurite is a profoundly deep blue copper mineral, named from the ancient Persian lazhward — simply, blue. From Egypt to Renaissance Europe it was ground down into the most expensive blue pigment in painting. And it is geologically restless: it oxidises and shifts, letting bright green malachite swirl into its depths while the host rock weaves in off-white quartz and golden limonite. It has been called the Stone of Heaven — deep, visionary insight; the ability to see through complexity.

The cloth

A commanding canvas of abyssal blue, fractured by strikes of gold, green and off-white — a midnight sky broken by natural lightning. Made for the days you need to bring a storm of different elements together into one vision.

Where it comes from

Azurite forms only in the weathered cap of a copper deposit, where rainwater has spent centuries dissolving copper out of the rock and setting it down again as blue. Every famous name is closed — Chessy in France, where the mineral was named in 1824; Tsumeb in Namibia, flooded since 1996; Bisbee in Arizona, 1975. What still comes out of the ground today is dug by hand from hillside veins at Cochapata in the Peruvian Andes, documented by gemologists in 2017.

Boulder Opal

Boulder opal exists in western Queensland, Australia, and nowhere else on Earth. Silica-rich water seeped into the cracks of solid ironstone boulders sitting in a Cretaceous seabed, set as a gel, and hardened into precious opal — often in seams thinner than a fingernail, which is why the stone is always cut with its ironstone left on as backing. The result is a dense, earthy brown matrix suddenly fractured by fluid veins of electric teal, cyan and soft purple: visionary colour held by an unshakeable base. It was first found at Listowel Downs station in 1869.

The cloth

Sweeping, marbled earth tones broken by fluid strikes of teal and lavender — the grounded work and the brilliance cutting through it, in one weave.

Where it comes from

The named fields — Quilpie, Yowah, Koroit, Opalton, Jundah — are worked as small family claims on roughly ten-year leases that require the land to be rehabilitated at the end. Every stone is traceable to a named field and usually to a named family. Of all the stones in this collection, it has the cleanest story to tell.

Dendritic Agate

It begins as pure, milky chalcedony. Over millions of years, water carrying manganese and iron seeps into invisible fissures, and as it evaporates the minerals crystallise outward in stark branching patterns — winter branches, delicate ferns, scattered seeds caught in ice. Ancient Greek farmers buried these stones in their fields at sowing time, believing the sprawling internal networks would pass to their crops. It has been the Stone of Plenitude ever since.

The branches are not fossil plants — not moss, not ferns. They are manganese, crystallising along hairline cracks, arriving at the same shape life does for the same reason: the fastest way to fill a space is to keep dividing.

The cloth

A crisp cream canvas scattered with dark botanical sprays — the branching matrix of the raw gem, read as cloth.

Where it comes from

The classic material forms in the Deccan Traps of Maharashtra and Gujarat, and has been cut at Khambhat — a lapidary town whose bead-cutting tradition runs back more than four thousand years. Brazil supplies the volume. One honest note: "Indian" dendritic agate often means cut in India, not mined there.

The blue variety of dendritic opal forms when manganese and iron seep into pale silica and crystallise as sprawling fronds — slate-blue etchings on cream that look exactly like hand-drawn winter forests or river networks trapped in stone. A stone that looks planted, though nothing ever grew inside it. Like its agate cousin it carries the Stone of Plenitude tradition: deep roots, patient expansion.

The cloth

A cream ground drawn all over in slate blue — branching scenes inked by minerals rather than hands, classical and quietly ornate.

Where it comes from

Honestly: the trade is fragmented here, and the naming is loose. Blue common opal with dendrites traces to the Acari mining district in Arequipa, Peru; related material comes from New Mexico; and dealers use "dendritic opal" and "dendritic chalcedony" interchangeably even though the difference changes the stone's hardness by a full point. Nobody can name you a single mine, so we will not invent one.

Agatised Fossil Coral

Twenty to thirty million years ago, coral colonies growing in shallow warm seas were buried under silt. Silica-rich groundwater moved through them and replaced the coral skeleton cell by cell with chalcedony — keeping the structure exactly, changing the substance completely. Cut and polished, the result is a soft tan ground covered in small radiating rosettes, each one a single coral polyp frozen mid-bloom. It looks like a flower. It was an animal. It is now a stone.

The cloth

A sandy field scattered with small brown blossoms at even intervals, buttoned close down the front so the pattern reads as continuous. The most literal match in the collection, and the longest story: there are very few printed florals carrying thirty million years of narrative weight.

Where it comes from

Florida, principally — field-collected from the gravel beds of the Withlacoochee and Suwannee rivers, no mine involved, and legal without a permit on open state land. It has been Florida's state stone since 1979. Indonesia and Thailand produce genuine agatised coral too, so the name alone never proves the origin.

Jasper takes its name from an old French word meaning spotted or speckled stone, and this variety wears the name literally: a muddy olive-khaki base from ancient silicates like chlorite, interrupted by striking black spots and erratic connecting lines of iron oxide, crystallised under tectonic pressure. Jaspers are the Supreme Nurturers of gemological tradition — carried by warriors and strategists for grounding, endurance, and focus amid chaos.

The cloth

A deep olive ground crossed by black spotting and linework — unyielding, grounded, built to endure.

Where it comes from

This is the one stone in the collection with no verified birthplace at all. The mineral databases have no entry for it; dealer origin claims contradict each other outright. So we make no origin claim — we name what we can verify, and we tell you plainly when we cannot. The stone is real, the pattern is real, and its home is the trade's secret, not ours.

Lithium mica · worn as The Lepidolite

A lithium-rich mica in dusty rose, muted mauve and smoky purple, whose scaly structure scatters light into tiny reflective speckles — a stone that reads as a quiet nebula. Discovered in the eighteenth century and first named "lilalite" for its colour, it was renamed from the Greek for scale. The lilac, unexpectedly, is not the lithium at all: it is trace manganese. As one of the earth's richest lithium sources it became the historical stone of transition and calm under pressure — composure, mineralised.

The cloth

Dusty mauve and smoky brown scattered with fine white stardust — a quiet nebula against a night sky, for authority that does not need to be loud.

Where it comes from

It crystallises in the last, slowest-cooling pockets of granite pegmatites, which is why it grows in stacked plates rather than single crystals. Minas Gerais in Brazil supplies the volume; the famous names are the Stewart, Himalaya and Little Three mines of San Diego County, Bikita in Zimbabwe, and the Tanco mine in Manitoba.

Heat and pressure force dark iron oxides to streak and flow along fractures through a pale carbonate matrix, and the result looks like modern art — bold abstract strokes, sketched landscapes, a stone that seems drawn rather than grown. It is celebrated as a stone of grounding and creativity: minerals captured in movement.

An honest correction the trade rarely makes: Picasso "Jasper" is not jasper. True jasper is quartz; this is metamorphosed limestone, and its softness gives it away. The name stays because the trade made it famous — but you deserve to know what the stone actually is.

The cloth

An off-white canvas swept with bold slate-grey strokes — abstract, painterly, effortlessly modern.

Where it comes from

Beaver County, Utah — the hills west of Milford, in the old Star and Frisco silver districts, where the rock was transformed during mountain-building a hundred million years ago. Supply is small-scale and informal: collectors and small dealers rather than an operating quarry.

One of gemology's newest stones: discovered in 2006 by prospectors searching Madagascar's coast for Ocean Jasper. Unlike the spotted and fractured jaspers, Polychrome forms in seamless, fluid waves — warm peach, soft terracotta and muted slate blue swept together by iron and trace minerals during volcanic formation. It is read as a stone of movement and vitality: the desert's vast, shifting energy held still.

The cloth

Where it comes from

Northern coastal Madagascar — and no more precisely than that, because no source worth trusting has ever named the mine. It also travels under the names Desert Jasper and Royal Savannah Jasper: one stone, three names, which tells you more about the trade than about the stone.

Silvery, light-catching fibres fan across a deep green body in overlapping plumes, like feathers laid one over another — which is how the stone earned its name: the seraphim, the six-winged order of angels. Seraphinite is a trade name; the mineral is clinochlore, and the feathering is fibrous inclusions that only reveal their light in movement. A dark stone that carries its own glow, and shows it when it moves.

The cloth

Soft green worked with leaves in its own colour family, layered like feathers — a pattern that gives itself up slowly.

Where it comes from

One deposit on Earth: Korshunovskoye in Irkutsk Oblast, Eastern Siberia, where it comes out as an accessory of an iron mine — the by-product, never the target. A single-source stone from a remote corner of the world, which is precisely why it stays rare.

Most gems take their colour from trace metals. Smoky quartz takes its colour from time and radiation: clear quartz that has spent millions of years beside something radioactive, the smoke built atom by atom as natural radiation from the surrounding granite creates dark colour-centres in the crystal. When it forms with internal fractures and water it clouds into nebulous wisps — smoke suspended in glass. The Druids carried it to cut through fog and anchor the mind; in Scotland, as cairngorm, it is effectively the national stone.

The cloth

Deep cocoa, espresso and taupe blending like smoke suspended in glass — moody, resilient, relentlessly grounded.

Where it comes from

Commercially, Brazil and Madagascar; in legend, the Cairngorm mountains of Scotland, the Alpine clefts of St Gotthard, and Pikes Peak in Colorado — where it grows in the very same pockets as amazonite, two stones sharing one cradle of billion-year-old granite.

Obsidian is not a mineral but a glass — lava that cooled too fast for any crystal to grow. Snowflake obsidian is what happens when that glass is left alone long enough afterward: tiny radial clusters of cristobalite begin to crystallise inside the black, breaking the surface into soft grey-white florets. Every snowflake is a crystal that formed against the odds, inside a material defined by never crystallising. Humans made their first blades from obsidian — sharper than surgical steel — and have carried it ever since for protection and clear sight: black that shows you your own reflection.

The cloth

Jet black softened by cream blooms that only find you up close. Something can be hard and still be in flower.

Where it comes from

Glass Buttes in Lake County, Oregon — where the land is public, and anyone may gather obsidian freely up to a yearly limit, no permit, no mine, no middleman. On every axis we researched, the cleanest-sourced stone in the collection.

Formed in Jurassic seabeds about 160 million years ago, striped flint is famous for fluid, concentric bands of cream, taupe and earthy brown that read like swirling water or a topographic map — the stripes are not pigment but porosity, denser and looser bands reflecting light differently. Its legend, though, was written by hand: in the Neolithic it was the most prized toolstone of early Europe, flaked into blades that travelled hundreds of kilometres. Fluid, artistic beauty on the surface; an interior that strikes fire and cuts like glass.

The cloth

A luminous cream canvas flowing with concentric rings of taupe and brown — elegance on the surface, precision underneath.

Where it comes from

The Holy Cross Mountains of Świętokrzyskie, Poland. The legendary Neolithic mines at Krzemionki — four thousand shafts, lost for millennia and rediscovered in 1922 — are now a UNESCO World Heritage site and produce nothing. Today's stone is gathered from the flint-bearing belt outside the protected ground, which is exactly as it should be.

Thulite is named for Thule — the mythical island classical geographers placed at the northern edge of the world, believing it meant Scandinavia. Found first in Norway in 1820, it is zoisite blushed pink by manganese, forming in dense mottled masses with white calcite and grey quartz: rugged and elegant at once, a stone of warmth and grounded self-expression. Its family tells the better story — thulite, tanzanite and the green host rock of ruby are all the same mineral species. One mineral, three continents, three entirely different reputations.

The cloth

A dusty, warm mauve layered with intricate leaf motifs — rugged and refined in the same breath.

Where it comes from

Norway, in name and in origin: Sauland in Telemark is the type locality, Leksvik a confirmed source — and in December 2018 a road-tunnel crew at Snillfjord broke into fresh pink stone by accident, to the delight of the country's hobby geologists. Norwegian supply remains collector-scale, which suits a stone named after the edge of the world.
